We are excited to share this volunteer program for your consideration.

The BARC Sanctuary Volunteer program operates at Warriors Legacy, located in the rural village of Tabanan (around 40 minutes from Ubud or 1.5 hours from the airport).

Warriors Legacy is the first multi-species animal sanctuary in Bali and home to many rescued dogs, monkeys, horses, pigs, ducks and chickens.

Volunteer and you will:

  • receive hands-on experience in animal welfare
  • gain an understanding of the daily operation for a wildlife sanctuary and
  • enjoying making new friends while you are at it!

This page offers a general overview of the program. Our comprehensive Volunteers Guide is also available to download here. Please read this guide before submitting your application.

First of all, you will be supporting us as we continue to develop additional features and facilities at the sanctuary. These developments will improve the quality of life for our animal residents, and ultimately allow us to save more animals in Bali. Therefore your hard work has an impact, in ways both seen and unseen.

Furthermore, volunteering at the BARC Sanctuary is an experience that you will never forget!

Bali truly is a tropical paradise. In 2016 over 4.4 million people visited our shores. The BARC volunteer program offers you the opportunity to make new friends, experience life in a rural village, visit the tourist attractions and improve the quality of life for the animals.

It is a great opportunity to both have some fun and make a difference!

There’s always plenty to do at the sanctuary! Along with a great group of fellow volunteers, local staff and our volunteer coordinator to do it with.

You will work 8 hours per day, 6 days per week with 1 day off. Yet this schedule can be flexible as a result of the number of volunteers present. All requests are to be discussed directly with the volunteer coordinator.

A key role for volunteers is assisting in the day-to-day operation of the sanctuary. In addition, you may also have the opportunity to help out in our main dog shelter, if desired.

Daily duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Preparing, cooking and feeding the animals
  • Cleaning animal enclosures
  • Creating unique enrichment devices for the monkeys
  • Spending quality time with any dogs that are in need
  • Observation of the monkeys in preparation for release
  • Bathing and medicating the animals as needed
  • Light landscaping work as needed

Be prepared to be flexible and to get your hands dirty occasionally!

You will quickly get to know our animal residents and most of all, this is a great opportunity for you to make a real difference in their lives.

Due to the sanctuary being is set in a very rural area, far from most tourist sites and towns, volunteers will spend most of their time onsite. Then, excursions to other locations in Bali will be organised from time to time. All expenses are to be covered by volunteers who attend. Excursion destinations will include: beach trips, temple tours and other general tourist activities.

Volunteers must be over 18 years of age and have a strong understanding of conversational English and/or Indonesian.

Those aged 16 to 18, who desire to be considered, are to attend a BARC Sanctuary Tour with their parents where options will be discussed in person.

Due to the nature of this program, we are unable to admit anyone under the age of 16.
